Nine signs the roofer at your door is a storm chaser
Out-of-state plates are only the most obvious one.
The list
They knew about the storm before you did. They offer to 'waive' or 'cover' your deductible — illegal in Texas, and a fraud indicator everywhere. They want a contingency agreement signed before any inspection. Their license, if any, is in another state. The business address is a P.O. box or a rental. The warranty is from a company that may not exist next year. They pressure you to file today. They discourage you from getting a second opinion. They can't produce a certificate of insurance naming you.
What to do instead
Get a written quote from a roofer with a local address and a license or insurance you can verify. Read our state pages for how to check in Florida and Texas. And remember the deductible is yours to pay — a roofer who makes it disappear is usually inflating the claim to cover it, which is insurance fraud with your name on the policy.
